The eight-glasses-a-day rule is one of the most widely repeated pieces of health advice, and it has never had a solid scientific basis. The real answer is both less rigid and, for most people, already being met without conscious effort.
Where the eight-glasses number actually came from
The figure appears to trace back to a 1945 recommendation that included water from all food and beverage sources combined, not eight additional glasses of plain water on top of a normal diet. Somewhere in decades of repetition, the "including food" qualifier was dropped, and the number calcified into an isolated rule detached from where it started.
What actually determines your fluid needs
Body size, activity level, climate, and diet all affect requirements meaningfully. Someone in a hot, humid climate training outdoors needs considerably more fluid than someone in a cool climate with a sedentary day. Roughly twenty percent of daily fluid intake comes from food under normal circumstances — fruits, vegetables, soups, and other water-rich foods contribute more than most people account for when thinking about hydration purely in terms of glasses of water.
Thirst is a genuinely reliable guide for most healthy adults
For healthy adults without specific medical conditions, thirst is a well-calibrated signal, not something to override with a fixed schedule. The body regulates fluid balance with reasonable precision, and drinking specifically because a clock or a habit says to, rather than because of thirst, does not provide additional benefit for most people and can occasionally cause harm.
Why "more is always better" is actually wrong
Overhydration is uncommon but real, and in extreme cases produces hyponatremia — dangerously diluted blood sodium — which has caused documented deaths in endurance athletes who drank far beyond thirst during long events. This is not a common risk for typical daily activity, but it illustrates that water is not a substance where unlimited intake is automatically safer.
The situations where you genuinely need to drink beyond thirst
Intense or prolonged exercise, particularly in heat, where fluid losses can outpace thirst signaling in real time. Illness involving fever, vomiting, or diarrhea, where fluid losses are elevated and the body's thirst response may lag behind actual need. Pregnancy and breastfeeding, which increase fluid requirements. Certain medications and medical conditions that affect fluid balance, which should be guided by a doctor rather than general advice.
A genuinely useful practical check
Urine color is a reasonably good real-world indicator for most healthy people — pale yellow generally indicates adequate hydration, while notably dark urine suggests it is worth drinking more. This is a far more individualized and responsive guide than any fixed daily glass count could be.
What I actually tell patients
Drink when thirsty, drink more around exercise and heat, drink more when unwell with fever or fluid losses, and otherwise trust the signal rather than counting glasses against an arbitrary target that never had solid grounding to begin with.
